All girls should learn martial arts

If i have a daughter in the future, I definitely sign her up for some martial arts. Karate? Aikido? Judo? It will come in handy especially towards some not-so-friendly strangers. Of course, I have a reason for saying this. Let me recount what had happened today.

Took place in the mrt train bounds for Marina Bay station. It was not-so-crowded. Nevertheless several people had to stand. So I was standing and leaning against the plastic thingy that was near the right side of the door. An Indian guy was standing directly opposite me i.e. at the left side.

Minding my own business... looking out at the sceneries between yew tee and kranji

"Its nice" the Indian guy spoke.
I turned and stared. "Weird guy" talking to myself.
About to whirl away, " its nice" he repeated.
I gave a you-must-be nuts-to think-its-nice look and continued to mind my own business.
"Where you stay?" he asked.
Trying to be friendlier because my friends complained that I very ignorant or dao (proud) or cold.
"erm.. Ang mo kio" I lied, in case he harboured some evil intentions which he had as I later found out.

As the train approached Kranji mrt station, he positioned uncomfortably near me, about 10cm apart. Thinking he might not want to block the entrance for other commuters, I kept quiet. Well.. you see there was unusually large crowd of people swimming in such that the compartment was packed.

Suddenly, I felt a nudge on my elbow.
Its that guy. He was holding a peice of folded paper and pushing me to accept.
I gave an outright rejection by turning my back against him.

Then I felt someone touching my jacket which i was holding in my hand.
Almost by instinct, I clutched it tighter to myself and took a step foward.
Its that guy again. He was trying to slip the paper into my jacket and hoping to touch me at the same time. Fat chance. I am fast.
"so sorry" he apologised.
I am positively irritated, wanted to give him a stern warning. But I told myself to calm down because he MIGHT have lost his balance or something. Then he got more daring: blowing some air at my shoulder and around my neck. He purposely made it sounded and looked like he was blowing his nose. I knew better. The blowing had direction can.. Both times I endured. I am fuming!!! Never felt so violated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He must have realised that his provocations yielded no reaction, he gave up and got off at Admiralty.

I tell you.. he is so lucky to do it twice. I promised to nail him if he going to do it the third time. I already planned the moves I should execute given the small space: use my knee cap to kick his groin hard and punch his jaw. I will make sure it is his happiest moment to see the police AND the ambulance. ~ sirui, I am so sorry... no patient for you.

Anyway, God will not be happy either. That guy is so going to get it unless he repent.

Identitifications

It is rather common for us, at least for arts students, to try to guess which faculty a person comes from by appearance. I think most of you have tried this and came to a agreeable conclusion between your friends. Ok.. the following is my "experience" or discussion with this identification game.

"Shirlyn, I cant believe that you are from arts.."
"Why? cuz i have the 'science' look- the intellectual look?" ( I used to be a science student)
"Nono.. somethings missing.."
"erm... cuz I didnt wear make-up?"
"I dun think so... no..."
"uh...erm... I didnt dye my hair?"
"hmmm... i think thats the one"
"so.. an arts student supposed to have dyed hair?"
"not really lah.."
"and.. wear make-up regardless of weather?"
"ya.. I think that is the combination"

Conclusion: An arts student spend more time and money on appearance.

"aiyah... you will know a guy is from engin"
"how?"
"the 3 'S' lohz"
"eh?"
"Singlets, Shorts and Slippers"
"hahaa... ya ya true"
"I agree!... hehe"
"the girls.. some quite presentable but mostly also sui-bian"
"ya.."

Conclusion: An engin guy student is the sloppiest-. The girls are a tie with the science.

"students from law and bizad are well-dressed"
"ya true"

Conclusion: Law and bizad produce the best dressed people. Compare to arts, they are more formal, not as sleazy.

Fireworks and thoughts

Before the school term officially starts, I managed to catch the firework display at Marina Bay last saturday.
It is amazing, awesome and beautiful. In short, I am spell-bounded. It made all the running, perspiring and squeezing worthwhile.
At a glance, I noticed most people were video-ing the display via their digital camera or cell phones. Not that I oppose their actions, but what is the point? I believed the brain (and the heart) can capture more than the devices. I had an urge to ask them for their rationales but my sanity stopped me. So I came up with the following imagined conversation:
"Why do you record this display"
"So that my friends and relatives can see.. and as a rememberance"
"Then why arent your friends and relatives with you?"
"They busy and dislike the squeezing"
"Do you think they will enjoy as much as you did?"
"I think so..."
"In years to come, will you still remember the display?"
"Of course not duhz. Thats why I recorded it"
"Which will you remember more vividly, without the devices, the display or the emotions that you are feeling now?"
"Emotions"

Though it is only a make up, but I believed this is how the majority will reply. Sharing the beautiful moments with your friends or relatives or family is wonderful, but have you ever wish that they would be doing or watching with you? Time is the best thing you can share with someone. The display might be forgotten but the feelings will be forever. Treasure the time you spend with them. I love fireworks, and usually watch with my friend(s). Reason: so that they can enjoy fireworks as much as I do. The burst of happiness in my heart every moment I saw a firework exploded in the sky is beyond description.

time to blog

It is almost two months since the last time I made a post. Time to update my life! I have stop working because school is starting, or rather started. It is a bitter-sweet feeling. Bitter because it is the end of the honeymoon and the start of my study nightmare. Sweet because working is so much harder than studying and get to see my friends again.

It is going to be exciting semester!! Firstly, both monday and friday are my free dayS! Secondly, the textbook for SSA2215 is only one inch thick! Ok.. here are the modules I taking:
NM2208: Principles of Visual Communication
NM2216: Introduction to Interactive new media
CH2121: History of Chinese Literature
CH2291: Chinese Tradition
SSA2215: Biophysical Environment of Singapore

Oh manz.. I jumping in my seat.
